A digital painting of Huernia thuretii or “lifesaver plant”, a short, stubby succulent with leaves that have four lobes with spikes at regular intervals. The plant yellows and then goes rusty red at the tips of each leaf. This specimen has two star shaped flowers and a star shaped bud- the flowers are gold with ruddy leopard like spots, and a deep well at the center. These flowers smell strongly of rot to attract pollinators. The flowers, bud, and spikes are guilded in gold leaf on this painting.
